C&L TRUEFLOW AIR INTAKE UPGRADE & TUNING SOLUTIONS FOR 2005-2008 V6 MUSTANG

Knowing that many of the people who have purchased the surprisingly
peppy new V6 Mustang had their hearts set on "V8" level performance, we
just had to offer a complete V6 version of our GT upgrade to owners of
these vehicles. We heard that many of the new V6 Mustang owners
originally wanted the V8 model, but became frustrated with the fact that
they have been difficult to purchase due to their popularity. A short
test drive in the new V6 Mustang, and you will know that this is by far
the most powerful base Mustang ever produced. Knowing that this car is
factory rated at 210 HP, we fully expected the baseline performance for
our automatic test vehicle to be considerably lower. We had hoped to
use a manual equipped test vehicle, but quickly found out that only one
in ten of the V6 models are ordered with the manual transmission, as
most people want the automatic in the V6 model, or at least that is what
the dealerships think. On the GT, things are quite the opposite, as
most of those vehicles come with the manual transmission. Using a
manual vehicle for testing offers certain inherent advantages, but we
found that by turning the overdrive "off" and doing a pull in third gear
from about 2,500 to 6,200 RPM, we were able to get pretty reliable results.
As a general rule on most ALL vehicles, the rear wheel output is
generally 35 HP less than advertised on a car that is equipped with a
manual transmission, and approximately 60 HP less on an automatic
vehicle. Forget about trying to apply percentages to rear wheel
numbers, as that only serves to inflate your values as you generate
higher levels of power. On nearly every vehicle that we have ever
tested, this rule of thumb has always been consistent. Much to our
surprise, the automatic equipped V6 model put down an HONEST 175 rear
wheel HP, which is a full 25 HP more than what we expected. This is on
par with what we would have expected the manual version to deliver.
This means that either A) Ford is under-rating this vehicle or B) The
transmission in this vehicle is considerably more efficient than
previous automatics or C) our particular test vehicle was well broken-in
(17K miles) and stronger than typical. Since we do not have test data
from a manual equipped vehicle, we will leave that for you to decide.
We do know that the results during testing were quite repeatable. Also
of note, the "bump" in the dyno graphs are due to the electronic control
of the torque converter. Rather than look at the "peak" numbers, which
are inflated by this function of the torque converter, your must analyze
the average performance data across the pull to determine actual gains.
By doing this, you will find that the improvements are no less than 10
rear wheel horsepower, with a typical gain of around 12 and a peak
improvement of around 15.

Be VERY cautious of outlandish performance claims made by others
promising "V8 type" performance improvements on the new V6 Mustang.
While we would love to claim that this system performs just as well as
the 26-31 HP gains that can be realized by our 3V GT systems, you have
to consider that your improvements are proportional to your starting
power level. A new V6 Mustang makes roughly 2/3rds the power of the V8
model, and it would be unrealistic to believe that the same type of air
intake and tuning modifications would make more than 2/3rds the
improvement of what the V8 models receive. The MINIMUM improvement that
our V8 combo provides is typically 23 rear wheel horsepower. 2/3rds of
that amount equals 15.18 HP, which is actually pretty close to the
results that you will see here in our testing. It must be noted that
our test vehicle came equipped with low octane fuel so most of the
testing was using 87 and 91 octane timing levels. We tried to improve
the octane of our test vehicle by topping the tank off with 93 octane,
but we were unable to find benefit in more aggressive tuning due to the
fact that we were not running a tank of "true" high octane fuel. So it
is possible that someone who is running nothing but premium unleaded
would be able to achieve better results than in our testing.
The baseline/stock testing showed an air/fuel ratio which hovered
between 13.4 and 13.5:1, which is actually a little leaner than ideal.
The factory stock timing level peaked at only 19 degrees of total
advance. The "After" dyno pull shows the performance that was achieved
with our complete air intake assembly running an average of 13.0:1 and a
total timing level of only 26 degrees. Some would consider this to be
an "87 octane" tune, but we feel that it is probably a couple of degrees
too aggressive for most vehicles with low grade fuel. Since we were
running a fuel blend which is lower than your typical premium fuel, we
were unable to make more power when raising the timing up to the 29 to
30 degree level that is delivered in the higher octane tunes. If we had
a tank of strictly premium fuel, it is possible that we may have found a
little more power.
In addition to our own dyno testing, Doug at Bamachips has provided us with the following dyno test of a customer's manual transmission equipped V6 Mustang. Before this vehicle was baselined, the customer had already installed an upgrade exhaust system (we do not know who the manufacturer of these upgrades were), and this accounts for the strong baseline numbers. After installing our air intake and a custom tune performed by Doug, the car responded with an excellent gain across the board with a very impressive peak improvement of 12.6 HP and an even more impressive peak improvement of 16 HP at 4900 RPM.
When you purchase our complete air intake upgrade, you will receive
everything to replace the entire air intake assembly from the throttle
body forward. This includes V6 specific C&L Trueflow air inlet tube with
hoses/clamps/fittings, an upgrade 83mm CNC machined aluminum mass
airflow housing, conical air filter assembly, filter shroud assembly,
installation tool and instructions. When installing this or ANY
aftermarket air intake upgrade that replaces the factory air filter and
meter assembly, you must make the necessary tuning adjustments to your
computer. If not, your air/fuel ratio will run considerably leaner than
stock and the vehicle will not operate properly, causing undesirable
driving conditions.
To make these modifications easier for the end user, we have worked
closely with Diablosport to develop a C&L specific Predator tuner (part
#CL7140) which comes pre-loaded with all of the tunes necessary to
support all of the existing computer box codes in the 2005-2008 Mustang
vehicles. Once this tuner is plugged into the vehicles' interface under
the dashboard, it will automatically recognize which computer your car
is equipped with and will offer a selection of tunes to support stock
timing, 87 octane, 91 octane and 93 octane fuel. Once selected, the
tuner will make all of the necessary adjustments to the computer to
support the upgrade air intake assembly as well as the timing
adjustments that are appropriate for your fuel grade. It is strongly
suggested that you purchase our combo that comes complete with our
custom Predator tuner, as using other tuning options (even the standard
Diablosport Predator for your vehicle) will require a bit of extra
effort to install a "custom tune" to support any aftermarket air intake
assembly. For more detailed information about the features of this
tuner, and why you should purchase it with our system, please read the
information provided in the link on this page. In addition to the tunes
that are pre-loaded into our Predator, our installation instructions for
the V6 kit includes tuning tips that will help you optimize your setup,
even if you do not have access to a wide-band air/fuel ratio monitor or
a dyno.
We are pleased to offer a truly complete solution for these vehilces,
and we hope that owners of the new V6 Mustang will appreciate the
benefits that this new system has to offer. If you have any questions
about this or any of our other products, please feel free to contact us
or any of our authorized distributors.
